Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to start my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Entering the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and reserved nature was ready for. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly a particularly daunting element of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be one of your major worries. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day hiding away in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, though, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve found a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I found that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to help you reach out to others. I also realized that if you can be anything, be authentic. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and the university, you’ll surely encounter people who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting doesn’t always bolster your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly guarantee that others don’t either. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students can struggle. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year about our difficulties. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are various ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the support you’re offered. You can never have too much assistance!
In summary, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be alleviated through the diverse support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and demonstrated how to find enjoyment amid pressures such as exams and deadlines.
