**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed by anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the cusp of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted, diving into this new experience seemed overwhelming. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I realize just how much I’ve absorbed and how much I’ve progressed.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting tasks I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re a future student perusing this, it’s probable that you’re concerned about the same issue. On my introductory day in student housing, just a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others.

Fast forward to the present, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—individuals who share my passions and stand by me through highs and lows. What made the difference? Taking that courageous first step and initiating small chats with people who were just as tentative and unfamiliar as I was.

So, what have I gleaned? First off, it’s invariably worthwhile to take that initial leap, even if it feels intimidating. If you’re not prepared to do it immediately, don’t stress—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with your peers. Secondly, the most beneficial thing you can do is to be authentic. With a community as diverse as Imperial’s, you’re certain to encounter individuals with whom you connect.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more daunting. It’s easy to succumb to feelings of being overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when observing others study and seemingly excel.

What aided me during this period was a straightforward yet impactful reminder: everyone is navigating similar waters. If you find yourself struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are facing the same difficulty. The crucial part is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. This is perhaps the most critical insight I gained during my first year: do not hesitate to ask for help.

### Remarkable Staff and Support System

Speaking of assistance, the personnel in the Materials department are genuinely remarkable. They truly care about students’ success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they sustained open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing guidance.

While I didn’t fully exploit the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged sooner. Initially, I took a brave step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to foster meaningful connections with faculty members. This turned out to be an invaluable journey. Whether through formal positions or informal encounters, familiarizing yourself with the staff is among the best choices you can make for your well-being. My primary takeaway? Utilize the resources and support available to you—you can never have too much help.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to and during university—was often unfounded. There is a wealth of support available, both from faculty and fellow students, to assist you in navigating the various challenges. I’ve understood that I’m never truly alone and have discovered how to balance exam stresses and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.

As I contemplate my first year, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the growth, friendships, and experiences that have molded me. For anyone about to embark on their university adventure, remember that it’s entirely normal to feel anxious—but also recognize that you are capable of overcoming those fears and flourishing in this new phase of your life.
