Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. As a first-year student, I was on the verge of embarking on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering. Venturing into the unknown was far from my former shy and reserved nature. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a wealth of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most formidable hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most intimidating elements of commencing university, and for prospective students, it may be their greatest concern. On the initial day of moving into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too fearful to venture out and make introductions. Today, I can assert with confidence that I have formed some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not prepared or comfortable, don’t worry! There will be numerous ice-breaking events to assist you in connecting with others. I also found that being true to yourself is vital. Among the many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who connect with you.
Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even greater jump from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel less capable. What aided me was recalling that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re struggling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most critical lesson for the first year. Reach out for help from peers and faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and keep an open line of communication regarding our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I talked about taking risks earlier – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to become acquainted with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous methods to engage with faculty, and it’s among the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway is to utilize the support available. You can never have too much!
In conclusion, this year has illustrated that feelings of anxiety, both preemptively and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated with the support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never alone and has taught me how to find joy in the midst of stressors such as examinations and deadlines.
