Ten months back, in October 2022, I found myself anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not a scenario my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back on the last academic year, I perceive a journey filled with personal development, obstacles, and fun times. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day locked in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the most wonderful friendships at the university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all started with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? It’s beneficial to take the plunge at the start of the academic year. If you’re not prepared or feel uneasy, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities to help you connect with others. Moreover, if you can be anything, be authentic. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another significant challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a striking increase from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first to the second term. Being in this type of environment can impact your self-esteem; witnessing others studying may lead to self-doubt. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, chances are, others are struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This could be the defining lesson of the freshman year. Reach out to classmates and instructors!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and maintain ongoing communication regarding our issues. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke earlier about taking leaps – I made one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position gave me the chance to interact with faculty members, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson is to seize the support offered. You can never have an excess of help!
In conclusion, this year has shown me that anxious feelings about university are frequently baseless and can be eased with the backing available from faculty and peers. It has revealed that I am not alone and has taught me how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
