Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a freshman. Plunging into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted nature was ready for. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a considerable amount of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This undoubtedly ranks among the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you are a potential student reading this, it may be one of your foremost concerns. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room as I felt too nervous to venture out and meet others. As I sit here today, I can affirm that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and in this course. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with engaging in small conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I discovered that it’s always wise to make a bold move at the beginning of the year. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be countless ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody anything, be true to yourself. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.
A further challenge was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always conducive to your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re struggling with something, I can nearly assure you that others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from both your peers and the staff!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are extraordinary. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding toward students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year was nearing its end, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I mentioned taking bold steps earlier – I indeed took one at the year’s outset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous methods to familiarize yourself with staff, and it is certainly one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university life is to seize the help being offered to you. You can never have too much assistance!
In summary, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the support systems available from staff and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I am never truly alone, and it has illustrated how to find joy even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
