Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself anxious, afraid, and unsure about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not an experience my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a good deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current state?

One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is unquestionably one of the more daunting facets of starting university, and if you’re a potential student reading this, it might be among your primary worries. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term start, I spent the entire day cooped up in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. Sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all started with some casual conversations with fellow newcomers. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that it’s essential to take bold steps at the beginning of the year. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody one trait, be yourself. With such a vast array of individuals across the course and university, you’re certain to meet those who resonate with you.

An additional hurdle was the demands of the coursework and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always beneficial for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate in comparison. A few strategies helped me navigate those feelings, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can almost assure you that others are equally puzzled. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They are committed to your success and recognize that students may encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had recognized its value earlier. I talked about taking leaps before – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to get to know faculty members, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My main takeaway regarding this aspect of university life is to make the most of the resources available to you. You can never have too much support!

Overall, this year has imparted the lesson that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased by the various support options offered by both staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone, and it has shown me how to have a good time while managing stressors such as exams and deadlines.
