Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was consumed by anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back, I can identify a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current state?

One of the initial and most daunting challenges was forming friendships. This is undeniably one of the more intimidating elements of embarking on university life, and if you’re perusing this as a prospective student, it may rank among your top concerns. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and greet others. Nonetheless, as I sit here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever had, at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I come to understand? I realized it’s best to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing you can be, it’s yourself. With the diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you’re bound to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. Several factors assisted me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar hurdles. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can nearly guarantee there are others who are equally perplexed. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson learned in the first year. Request help from your peers and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students experience challenges. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I did make one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to become acquainted with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are ample ways to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best steps you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway regarding this aspect of university is to seize the support being offered to you. You can never have an excess of help!

All in all, this year has illuminated that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be alleviated by the various support resources offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never isolated, and it has demonstrated how to enjoy my experience amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
