In October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with nerves, apprehensions, and uncertainties regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Encountering the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current position?
A significant and initially intimidating challenge was forging friendships. This definitely tops the list of daunting aspects when beginning university, and if you’re a future student reading this, it may be the source of your greatest unease. On my move-in day, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent an entire day secluded in my room because the thought of stepping out and introducing myself to others felt too formidable. Nevertheless, sitting here now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was initiating small conversations with those in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I realized that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not feeling fully prepared or at ease, no worries! There will be plenty of ice-breaker chances and activities to help you interact with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse group of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to connect with those aligned with your personality.
Another obstacle was handling the workload and difficulty of the content. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can sometimes be challenging for your confidence; watching others study may leave you feeling insufficient. A few strategies aided me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you others are as well. So, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to internalize in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty within Materials is fantastic. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They relate to students and have ongoing communication with us throughout the academic year concerning our difficulties. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral care until late in the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. I mentioned taking bold steps at the beginning; I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This opportunity allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the support available to you. You can never have too much assistance!
All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the extensive support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has illustrated how to find enjoyment even alongside stressful elements like exams and deadlines.
