Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself anxious and uncertain about the future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year packed with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting facets of commencing university, and if you’re a potential student reading this, it might be a concern for you. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days before classes began, I spent the whole day isolated in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. As I sit here today, though, I can assertively say I’ve made some of the closest friends I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in light conversation with peers in similar situations. So, what insights did I gain? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be plenty of ice-breaker occasions and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the program and university, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another obstacle I confronted was the demands of the coursework and the complexity of the content. There was definitely a noticeable increase in difficulty from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can test your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel insignificant. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you there are others who share that confusion. Therefore, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from both your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my following point. The staff in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with our struggles and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had reached out earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps— I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff, which is exceptionally beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s certainly one of the most worthwhile actions you can take for yourself! My key lesson from this segment of university life is to fully utilize the support available to you. You can never have too much!

Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated through the various support systems offered by the staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find joy amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
