Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year enriched with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of fun! So, what insights have I gained this year, and where am I at now?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This aspect is frequently one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it might weigh heavily on your mind. On my first day of moving into my accommodations, days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, today I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with individuals in similar predicaments. So, what have I taken away from this? I learned that taking a risk at the onset of the year is always advisable. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker opportunities and events to facilitate connections. I also found that embracing your true self is essential. With a wealth of diverse individuals throughout the program and university, you’re certain to discover like-minded peers.
Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was definitely a significant increase from A-levels, and in many ways, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an atmosphere can be quite challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few strategies assisted me through that sensation, one being the reminder that we are all in the same situation. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that others are facing the same issue. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and the faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely wish for you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They relate to students and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our difficulties. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I regret not doing so sooner. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I took one at the year’s outset by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to become acquainted with the staff, and it’s undeniably one of the best actions you can take for your personal growth! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support available. You can never have too much!
All in all, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated by the diverse support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to relish my experiences despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
