Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the cusp of beginning my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year scholar. Stepping into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and quiet self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the early and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This can be one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re a future student, it might be a significant concern. On my initial day moving into accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I remained in my room all day, too daunted to step out and make introductions. Today, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I realized it’s important to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events available to help you connect with others. I also learned that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you are certain to find people who share your interests.
An additional challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Existing in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe peers studying and feel inferior. What assisted me was recalling that everyone is navigating the same path. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that others don’t either. So, reach out for assistance. This might be the most significant lesson to learn in your first year. Seek help from classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the difficulties students experience. They are compassionate and maintain ongoing communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t engage with pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is invaluable. There are various ways to connect with staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the support available. You can never have an excess!
In conclusion, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the assistance available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
