In October 2022, ten months back, I felt anxious, frightened, and unsure about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was far from what my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Now, looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the most significant and intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of initiating university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it might rank as one of your major worries. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days before the semester kicked off, I spent the entire day retreating in my room, too intimidated to step out and introduce myself to anyone. Fortunately, I can now assert that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had here at this university and this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was a bit of small talk with others in the same boat. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a leap at the year’s beginning is always beneficial. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody anything, be genuine. There are countless diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares this experience. If you find something baffling, I can almost assure you that others do too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace in the first year. Seek help from your classmates and the staff!
This leads me to my next observation. The staff within the Materials department are incredible. They genuinely want you to excel and understand that students face challenges. They connect with students and keep consistent communication with us regarding our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t make full use of the support systems until the year’s end, but I wish I had earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – at the year’s onset, I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous means to get acquainted with staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance being offered. You can never receive too much!
In a broader context, this year has illuminated for me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are usually unwarranted and can be mitigated by the wide array of support options provided by staff and fellow students. It’s taught me that I am never alone, and it has guided me on how to relish my experience amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
