Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of beginning my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what knowledge have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is undeniably one of the more daunting parts of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Today, I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s advantageous to take a chance at the year’s outset. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events geared toward helping you bond with others. I also came to understand that if there is one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and university, you are sure to encounter people like yourself.
Another challenge was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undeniably a rise from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater increase from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a setting can test your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that there are others who are equally confused. So, request assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for support from your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely wish for you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They sympathize with students and keep open lines of communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the support services until the last part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances earlier – I did make one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be eased with the numerous support options accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment even in the face of pressures such as exams and deadlines.
