By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt nervous and uncertain about embarking on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Engaging in something unfamiliar was not characteristic of my previously shy nature. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize growth, obstacles, and enjoyment. What have I discovered, and what is my current status?

One of the first hurdles was forging friendships. This can be intimidating for new university students, and I found myself spending the first day in my accommodation retreating to my room, daunted by the thought of meeting new individuals. Now, I can confidently say I’ve made some of the best friendships here. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, all initiated through casual conversations. I understood the value of taking a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re hesitant, don’t fret—there are numerous ice-breaker activities. Be authentic, and you’ll encounter like-minded individuals.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and complexity of content. There was a significant leap from A-level studies, particularly from the first to the second term. It’s easy to question your abilities, but keep in mind that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re struggling with something, it’s likely others are too. Seek assistance from peers and faculty; it’s essential during the first year.

The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want students to thrive and are aware of the challenges faced. They keep communication open regarding issues throughout the year. I didn’t utilize pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative, which facilitated my connection with the staff. There are numerous opportunities to engage with faculty, and it proves advantageous. Embrace the support available; you can never have too much!

This year has taught me that anxiety about university is often misplaced and can be eased with help from both staff and fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never isolated and how to find enjoyment even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
