Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was used to. In hindsight, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re here as a future student, it could be a significant worry for you. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days before classes started, I spent the whole day cooped up in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, now I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships during my time at university and in my program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with people in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is essential. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, that’s perfectly fine! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities designed to help you connect with others. I also found that being authentic is vital. With a wide variety of individuals among the program and university, you are sure to encounter others who share your interests.
Another difficulty was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a jump from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first semester to the second. Being in such a setting can impact your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors helped me navigate this, one being the assurance that everyone finds themselves in the same boat. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost guarantee that others don’t either. So, reach out for assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to absorb in the first year. Don’t hesitate to seek help from peers and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges students encounter. They relate to our experiences and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the supportive resources until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position gave me the opportunity to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues through which you can engage with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make use of the available assistance. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never isolated and how to find enjoyment despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
