Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and unsure about the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting facets of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it might rank among your top worries. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room out of fear of stepping out and introducing myself to others. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar predicaments. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of opportunities and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one quality, let it be authenticity. With the diverse array of individuals across the course and the university; you’re sure to encounter people like yourself.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors assisted me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar situations. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that others are in the same predicament. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They are genuinely invested in your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with us and keep communication open throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I spoke about taking risks – I did take a significant step at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this element of university life is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never have too much!

In a broader sense, this year has illuminated the fact that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, often lack basis and can be alleviated through the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never solitary, and it has revealed how to find enjoyment even amidst the stressors of exams and deadlines.
