Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Diving into the unknown wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved persona was used to. Looking back, I realize this year has been packed with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyable moments! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most formidable challenges I faced was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more nerve-wracking aspects of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it could be one of your primary worries. On my first day moving into my lodging, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day concealing myself in my room due to my fearfulness about stepping out and meeting others. However, sitting here today, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was a bit of casual conversation with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I’ve discovered that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel particularly prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I’ve also learned that if you can embody one thing, let it be your authentic self. There is a vast array of individuals throughout the course and university; you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.
Another challenge I encountered was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in several aspects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment isn’t always the easiest for your self-esteem; you may observe peers studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the realization that everyone is navigating the same challenges as you. If something eludes your understanding, I can almost assure you that a number of others share your confusion. Thus, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn during the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for support from your classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for you to succeed and acknowledge that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until later in the year, but I wish I had accessed them earlier. I mentioned taking leaps – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s certainly one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to seize the assistance you’re being offered. You can never have an excess of it!
In general, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both leading up to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated by taking advantage of the wide range of support available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never solitary, and it has taught me how to find enjoyment alongside stressful elements such as exams and deadlines.
