Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I can see a year filled with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of starting university, and if you are an incoming student, it could be your foremost worry. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the classes commencing, I spent the entire day hidden in my room, too scared to step out and meet others. However, today I can proudly say I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, both at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking risks at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not quite prepared or at ease, no need to fret! Numerous ice-breaking activities are available to help you connect with others. I also discovered that being authentic is essential. Among the vast array of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded people.
Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly an increase in demand from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an atmosphere can test your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. What aided me through this was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling with something, I can nearly assure you that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Look for support from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges students endure. They show empathy and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year; however, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I referenced taking leaps earlier – and I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is priceless. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this element of university life is to utilize the assistance provided. You can never receive too much help!
In summary, this year has revealed that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated through the various support systems available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and taught me how to find enjoyment even amid pressures like exams and deadlines.
