Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was poised to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyable moments! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current state?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening parts of starting university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it may be among your top worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day isolating myself in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most incredible friendships I’ve ever experienced, both at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar predicaments. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a leap of faith at the beginning of the year is invariably the best approach. If you don’t feel completely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities and events designed to assist you in connecting with your peers. I also found that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals within the program and the university, you’re sure to encounter kindred spirits.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a noticeable transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even steeper climb from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can test your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me cope with that sensation, one of which was the acknowledgment that everyone shares the same experience. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can virtually assure you that others do too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might just be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely care about your success and understand that students face challenges. They relate to us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referred to taking leaps before – I took one at the start of the year when I became a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with staff members, which is incredibly advantageous. There are many opportunities to engage with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support available to you. You can never have too much!

In a broader sense, this year has instilled in me the understanding that feelings of anxiety, both in anticipation of and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be eased with the various support avenues provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like examinations and deadlines.
