Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I view a year full of personal development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect is often one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be your greatest concern. On the day I moved into my new accommodation, just days before the new term started, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too fearful to step out and mingle with others. Fast forward to today, I can proudly claim that I’ve formed some of the most incredible friendships of my life, here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated from casual chats with individuals in comparable situations. So, what have I learned? I discovered that making an effort to engage at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I’ve also recognized the importance of authenticity. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who share your interests.

An additional challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable escalation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment isn’t always easy for your self-esteem; you might observe your peers studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies helped me navigate through this sentiment, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you find something confusing, I can almost assure you others are too. Thus, seek assistance. This may be the key lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your colleagues and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students contend with. They relate to our experiences and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I did not fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I referenced taking leaps earlier – I embraced one at the year’s outset by serving as a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which holds immense value. There are various avenues to engage with staff, and this is among the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My main lesson from this element of university life is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

In general, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the diverse support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find joy despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
