Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my formerly timid self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what have I come to understand, and what is my current situation?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you are an aspiring student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my very first day of moving into my accommodation, only a few days prior to classes starting, I remained in my room the entire day, feeling too daunted to step out and meet others. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all initiated by engaging in casual conversations with individuals in analogous situations. What did I grasp? It’s essential to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaking activities designed to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, be authentic. Among the diverse individuals at the university, you’re bound to locate those who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a clear escalation from A-levels, and an even greater jump from the first to the second term. Navigating such an atmosphere can diminish your confidence; you might feel less capable compared to your peers. What assisted me was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you struggle with something, it’s likely others do as well. So, don’t hesitate to ask for support. This may be the most vital lesson of the first year. Seek help from classmates and faculty!
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department is outstanding. They genuinely wish for your success and comprehend the hurdles students encounter. They empathize and keep in touch with us throughout the academic year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had accessed it sooner. I mentioned taking chances previously – I did so by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This position enabled me to engage with staff members, which is invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to become acquainted with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that apprehensions regarding university are often unwarranted and can be eased with the support from staff and fellow students. It has revealed that I’m never truly alone and taught me how to find enjoyment despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
