In October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to commence my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not a norm for my previously timid and reserved self. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking parts of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On my first day settling into my lodgings, just days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too frightened to step out and introduce myself to others. Today, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what lesson did I take away? I discovered that taking a chance at the onset of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not precisely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking activities to aid you in connecting with others. I also realized that remaining true to oneself is essential. With such a diverse range of people in the program and university, you’re sure to find fellow spirits.

Another obstacle was the intensity and complexity of the workload. There was certainly an elevation from A-levels, and in some ways, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be daunting for your self-confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you others don’t as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for help from both your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They are invested in your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain consistent communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully exploit the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to build relationships with the faculty, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with the faculty, and it’s one of the finest actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to utilize the support available. You can never have an excess of it!

All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased with the variety of support options accessible from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to enjoy myself despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
