By Dawson La, Master of Engineering in Materials Science

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me as I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Jumping into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was used to. Reflecting back, I recognize a year brimming with personal growth, challenges, and enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This certainly represents one of the more frightening facets of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your foremost concerns. On my inaugural day settling into my residence, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, daunted by the thought of venturing out to greet others. Today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve nurtured a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was some casual conversation with those in similar circumstances. So, what insight did I gain? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you feel a bit unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities designed to help you connect with others. I also recognized that if you can embody one trait, let it be authenticity. There is a diverse array of individuals throughout the program and the university; you’ll encounter like-minded people.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was significant, and in many ways, there was an even more considerable leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe peers studying and feel inadequate in comparison. A few strategies helped me navigate that sentiment, one being the realization that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re struggling with a concept, I’m nearly certain there are several others who are experiencing the same confusion. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and professors!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely wish for you to succeed and understand the challenges students face. They connect with us continuously throughout the year regarding our difficulties. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. As I mentioned initially about taking risks – I did take one by becoming a well-being representative at the beginning of the year. This role allowed me to become acquainted with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to interact with staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for your growth! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to take full advantage of the assistance provided. You can never have too much!

On a broader scale, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, whether leading up to or during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be alleviated by the multitude of support mechanisms available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has taught me how to have fun while managing stressors like exams and deadlines.
