Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something I was familiar with, given my previously introverted and reserved nature. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking facets of beginning university, and if you are a prospective student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entirety of the day concealing myself in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had during my time at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s beneficial to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not yet ready or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the program and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undeniably a significant increase from A-levels, and in certain ways, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can challenge your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me during this was the awareness that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, I can almost assure you that others are experiencing similar difficulties. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out to peers and faculty for help!

This points me to my next observation. The staff in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the obstacles students encounter. They empathize with our situations and engage in consistent dialogue throughout the year concerning our worries. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had started sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with staff members, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be eased with the myriad support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment amid stressors such as exams and deadlines.
