Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

In October 2022, ten months ago, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and abundant enjoyment! But what insights has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?

One of the early and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is one of the more frightening elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my inaugural day moving into residence, a few days prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to anyone. Nevertheless, today I can emphatically say I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in comparable scenarios. So, what have I discovered? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always the best approach. If you’re not feeling ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with peers. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, let it be yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you are bound to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the extent of the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was undoubtedly a jump from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can shake your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you find something confusing, I can almost assure you that others do as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show empathy towards students and maintain constant communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the support system until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I mentioned taking chances – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much!

Ultimately, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unjustified and can be mitigated with the support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment amid stressors such as exams and deadlines.
