Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained from this year, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This aspect is often one of the most daunting when commencing university, and if you are perusing this as a potential student, it might be among your primary worries. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, only days prior to the term commencing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, today, I can proudly assert that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, a bond that initiated with casual conversations with others in comparable positions. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a bold step at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events designed to assist you in interacting with others. Additionally, I learned that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the intensity of the coursework and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in several aspects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being plunged into such a setting can be challenging for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few aspects aided me in navigating this feeling, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly guarantee that others are in the same situation. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out for help from your fellow students and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the struggles faced by students. They empathize and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the close of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referenced taking leaps earlier – I took one at the onset of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role afforded me the opportunity to connect with the faculty, which is exceedingly valuable. There are numerous avenues to engage with the faculty, and it’s among the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to fully utilize the support available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated by the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find joy amid pressures such as exams and deadlines.
