Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was accustomed to. Reflecting now, I observe a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
One of the foremost and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This aspect is frequently one of the most daunting when starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into my housing, a few days prior to classes commencing, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to step out and interact with others. Today, however, I can assertively say I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s beneficial to take a chance at the outset of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can be one thing, be authentic. With such a variety of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can challenge your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few elements aided me through this, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you others are struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most critical lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They desire for you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They are sympathetic to us and ensure ongoing communication throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to build rapport with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are various ways to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary insight from this facet of university is to make the most of the assistance provided. You can never have too much!
In conclusion, this year has illuminated for me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the support accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never solitary and how to have fun regardless of stressors like exams and deadlines.
