Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and unsure about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I stand now?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of starting university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it might be among your greatest concerns. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the beginning of the term, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Reflecting now, I can assertively say I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in small talk with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the year’s outset. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breakers and events to facilitate your connections with others. I also found that if you can embody one thing, be yourself. With a diverse array of people across the course and university, you are sure to encounter others like you.
Another challenge was the volume of work and the difficulty of the content. There was indeed a significant transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always beneficial for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. A couple of factors assisted me in overcoming this sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you encounter something you don’t comprehend, I can nearly assure you that others share the same struggle. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students may face difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding any concerns. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referred to taking chances at the beginning; I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous methods to build relationships with staff, and it’s certainly among the best choices you can make for yourself! My principal takeaway from this university aspect is to fully utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much help!
Overall, this year has enlightened me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the myriad of support options accessible from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone and how to find joy alongside the stressors such as examinations and deadlines.
