Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize that this year has been filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more unnerving aspects of entering university, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. However, I can now proudly say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships in my life here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all started with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I discovered? I’ve learned that it’s crucial to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous icebreaker activities and events designed to help you bond with others. I’ve also realized that if you can be anything, be true to yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals in the course and institution, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-Levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always conducive to your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me through that sensation, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that others are just as confused. Therefore, do not hesitate to seek help. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it truly is one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased through the ample support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has revealed how to find joy even amid stressors such as exams and deadlines.
