Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Entering into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This can often be one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to classes commencing, I spent the entire day retreating into my room, too shy to venture out and greet others. However, today I can boldly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all started with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that it’s essential to take that initial leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not completely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events designed to help you connect with others. I also discovered that being your true self is essential. With the diverse community across the program and university, you are likely to find those who resonate with your vibe.

Another significant challenge involved managing the workload and complexity of content. There was certainly a notable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an environment can challenge your confidence; you might witness others studying and feel less capable. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you encounter difficulty in understanding something, I can almost assure you there are others who feel the same way. Thus, it’s important to ask for assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your classmates and faculty for support!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and acknowledge the challenges students encounter. They are understanding and keep in consistent touch with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

All in all, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are typically unfounded and can be soothed through the various support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and has equipped me with the ability to enjoy myself alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
