Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Approximately ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I realize I experienced a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be one of your largest concerns. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation a few days ahead of the term’s start, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and interact with others. Nowadays, I can assert with confidence that I’ve established some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, both at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar positions. What did I discover? It’s crucial to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging to your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. Several factors helped me cope with that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that others are confused too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to absorb in your first year. Seek guidance from classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely desire to see you thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show compassion for students and engage in ongoing dialogue throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I took one at the year’s outset by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My central takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the available support. You can never have an excess of assistance!

All in all, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated through the available support from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and has taught me how to find joy despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
