Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the deep end wasn’t something my formerly timid and reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, hurdles, and immense enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting facets of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your primary concerns. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days before classes commenced, I dedicated the entire day to remaining in my room because I felt too intimidated to step out and introduce myself to others. Yet, sitting here today, I can profess that I’ve formed some of the most incredible friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this course. I’ve established a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversation with others in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? I found that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is invariably the best approach. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking chances and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing you can be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a notable leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always supportive of your confidence; you may observe others studying and question your own competence. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, starting with the realization that everyone shares your experience. If you find something perplexing, I can nearly guarantee that several others do as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Seek guidance from both your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They are empathetic towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the supportive resources until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances at the outset; I seized one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to familiarize myself with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My main lesson from this aspect of university is to seize the help that is being provided. You can never receive too much!

Broadly speaking, this year has instilled in me the understanding that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are almost always baseless and can be mitigated through the extensive support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never solitary, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment amidst sources of stress such as examinations and deadlines.
