Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Diving into the unknown was not something my typically shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize an academic year rich with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what have I gained from this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most daunting obstacles was forming friendships. This certainly ranks among the more intimidating elements of entering university, and if you are reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my arrival day at my accommodation, a few days prior to the term commencing, I spent the entire day hiding in my room out of fear of stepping out to meet others. However, as I sit here today, I can assert that I have forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what was my takeaway? I realized that it’s always beneficial to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events designed to help you engage with fellow students. I also discovered that if you’re going to be anything, be yourself. With such a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and complexity of the material. The progression from A-levels was certainly significant, and in some respects, the leap from the first term to the second was even larger. Being placed in such an environment isn’t always beneficial for one’s self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate by comparison. Several factors helped me navigate those feelings, one being the understanding that everyone shares similar challenges. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can almost promise that there are others who are equally puzzled. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face challenges. They connect with students and maintain ongoing dialogue with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to become acquainted with staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!

Overall, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be alleviated through the various support systems offered by staff and fellow students. It’s revealed to me that I am never alone, and it’s taught me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
