Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Engaging with the unknown was not something my formerly reserved self was familiar with. Looking back, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained from this year, and where do I find myself now?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This can be one of the most daunting elements of embarking on university life, and if you happen to be reading this as a future student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my initial day moving into my new residence, just days before the term started, I stayed in my room all day, too daunted to step outside and introduce myself. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always the best course of action. If you don’t feel ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting with fellow students. I also learned that if you can embody anything, be yourself. With the diverse array of individuals across the course and the university, you’re sure to find those who share your interests.
Another hurdle was the academic workload and the complexity of the content. There was indeed a shift from A-levels, and in many respects, a more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere isn’t always beneficial for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several things aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in a similar situation. If something is unclear to you, I can almost guarantee that others are puzzled too. Hence, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson learned in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for guidance from peers and faculty!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students face challenges. They show understanding towards students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had started sooner. I mentioned making leaps earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to build connections with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and it is one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to utilize the available support. You can never have too much assistance!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be eased by the support systems provided by the staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
