Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and unsure about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Jumping into unfamiliar territory was not something my formerly timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a journey replete with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the primary and most intimidating obstacles was fostering friendships. This frequently ranks as one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it may be among your foremost worries. On my first day moving into my dormitory, just days before classes kicked off, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to exit and introduce myself. Today, however, I can proudly declare I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all of which began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I’ve come to recognize that taking a chance at the outset of the year can be incredibly advantageous. If you’re not completely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and gatherings to facilitate your connections with others. I also realized that if you can embody one quality, let it be authenticity. With such a diverse range of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.

Another challenge was the volume of work and complexity of the material. There was a definite transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can take a toll on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few strategies helped me conquer that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly guarantee that others are in the same boat. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and faculty for help!

This naturally leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy toward students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had made use of it sooner. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and this is undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this facet of university is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be mitigated with the various support resources provided by faculty and peers. It’s taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
