Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of fun! But what lessons have I gained, and what’s my current position?
One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of starting university, and if you’re a future student, it may be a significant worry. On my first day moving into my residence, just days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day in my room, too scared to step outside and introduce myself. Now, I can confidently say I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at this university and during my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with light conversation with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? It’s wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be plenty of ice-breaking activities to assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, if you can embody one quality, be yourself. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another difficulty was the workload and complexity of the material. There was a marked increase from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first to second term. Being in such an atmosphere can impact your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. What aided me was recalling that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you don’t grasp something, others probably don’t either. So, seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson of the first year. Reach out for support from peers and staff!
This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the hurdles students encounter. They relate and keep consistent communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year was nearly over, but I wish I had done it earlier. I mentioned taking chances – I took one by serving as a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary message is to utilize the support available. You can never receive too much!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety about university are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the support available from staff and fellow students. It’s demonstrated to me that I’m never alone and how to enjoy myself regardless of pressures like exams and deadlines.
