Back in October 2022, ten months ago, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. As a first-year student, I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This aspect of starting university is undeniably one of the more daunting, and if you’re a future student, it’s likely a significant concern for you. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too anxious to emerge and engage with others. However, today I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with those in similar circumstances. So, what lesson did I derive? I learned that taking initiative at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel ready or at ease, that’s perfectly fine! There will be numerous ice-breaking events and opportunities to help you connect with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing you can be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the challenge of the content. There was certainly a noticeable increase in difficulty compared to A-levels, and in many ways, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an environment can test your self-confidence; you may observe others studying and feel less than capable. A few strategies helped me combat that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If something doesn’t click for you, I can almost assure you that others are in the same boat. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They relate to us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking initiatives before – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and it is one of the best steps you can take for your own success! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often misplaced and can be mitigated with the array of support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to embrace enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
