Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead as I geared up to start my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Stepping into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was familiar with. Looking back on the past academic year, I perceive a voyage of personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the foremost and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This can be nerve-wracking when commencing university, and future students might be most anxious about it. On the first day after moving into my accommodation, just prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day in my room, too apprehensive to step out and meet new people. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships here at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all by engaging in casual conversations with others in similar situations. What did I discover? It’s essential to take a bold step at the beginning of the year. If you’re not quite prepared or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking events to assist you in connecting with others. Also, if you can be one thing, be authentic. With such a wide array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded peers.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was a significant leap from A-levels, and an even larger one from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can test your self-assurance; you might feel insufficient alongside others. Keep in mind, everyone is navigating the same circumstances. If something isn’t clear, others probably find it confusing too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This is arguably the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek support from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They express understanding and ensure open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I spoke earlier about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson is to make the most of the available assistance. You can never receive too much support!
In summary, this year has imparted to me that feelings of nervousness regarding university are often baseless and can be mitigated with the backing provided by staff and fellow students. It has revealed that I am never alone and how to embrace enjoyment despite challenges like exams and deadlines.
