Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide, and what is my current perspective?
One of the foremost and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting facets of commencing university, and if you’re an aspiring student reading this, it might be among your largest worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day secluding myself in my room, too nervous to venture out and meet others. Yet today, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events designed to help you connect with others. I also realized that if you can be anything, be yourself. With such a variety of people throughout the course and university, you are bound to encounter kindred spirits.
Another obstacle was the workload and complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase compared to A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can sometimes challenge your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few elements assisted me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar circumstances. If something is unclear, I can nearly assure you that others are facing the same challenge. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This segues into my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They understand students’ struggles and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t effectively utilize the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I referenced taking leaps before – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have an excess of support!
Overall, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often unjustified and can be diminished with the numerous support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never solitary, and it has illustrated how to enjoy myself amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
