Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year full of personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting components of commencing university, and if you’re a future student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my initial day moving into my housing, just days prior to the term starting, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and engage with others. Now, I can assertively say I have formed some of the most meaningful friendships here at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with brief conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a plunge at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t stress! Numerous ice-breaker events exist to facilitate connections with others. I also recognized that being authentic is essential. With a wide array of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.

Another obstacle was the heavy workload and the complexity of the material. There was a discernible shift from A-levels, and an even more significant transition from the first to the second term. Being in such an atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was recalling that everyone shares the same experience. If you don’t grasp something, it’s likely that others are struggling too. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year. Reach out to peers and faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and keep in regular contact with us about our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous methods to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can undertake for yourself! My main lesson is to fully leverage the assistance provided. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the support available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never solitary and how to find enjoyment amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
