Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was ready for. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year imparted to me, and where do I currently find myself?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most unsettling aspects of commencing university, and it may be a primary concern for prospective students. On the day I moved into my residence, a few days ahead of the term’s start, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture outside and introduce myself. Nevertheless, I can now proudly assert that I’ve made some of the finest friends during my time at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all commenced with simple conversations with others in similar situations. So, what has this taught me? I’ve learned that making an effort at the year’s outset is always advantageous. If you’re not prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be abundant ice-breaking opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I’ve also found that authenticity is crucial. With the wide array of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another challenge was handling the workload and the intricacy of the material. There was certainly a significant increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more substantial leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate these feelings, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that others are as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The professors in Materials are outstanding. They are genuinely invested in your success and recognize that students encounter challenges. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking chances – I did take one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this facet of university life is to fully invest in the resources available. You can never receive too much assistance!
In summary, this year has illuminated for me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated with the various support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. It has underscored that I’m never alone and shown me how to find enjoyment even in the face of stressors such as exams and deadlines.
