Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was prepared for. Looking back, I realize it has been a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what have I discovered during this year, and what is my current situation?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a major worry for you. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all started with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I learn? I discovered that taking a chance at the start of the year is essential. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events to facilitate your connections with others. I also learned that being authentic is vital. With such a diverse population across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.
An additional challenge was the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was indeed a significant increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can take a toll on your confidence; you might witness others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate this, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly guarantee others don’t either. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from peers and staff!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the struggles students face. They show empathy and sustain ongoing communication throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully benefit from the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I referred to taking leaps earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are various ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the help available. You can never have an excess of support!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be soothed with the support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated and how to find joy despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
