Previously, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was preparing to begin my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Engaging with new experiences was not something my formerly introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a rich academic year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This clearly ranks as one of the more daunting parts of launching into university life, and if you are reading this as an incoming student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term kicking off, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, feeling too daunted to step out and meet others. However, I can proudly claim that I have formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all commenced with casual conversations with peers in similar predicaments. So, what has this taught me? I learned that taking a chance at the start of the year is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker possibilities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody one trait, be authentic. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and the university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the academic workload and complexity of the material. There was definitely a significant increase compared to A-levels, and in some aspects, an even steeper transition from the first term to the second. Being plunged into such a scenario can be tough on your self-esteem; seeing others study might make you feel inadequate. Several factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others are facing the same difficulties. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to absorb in the first year. Reach out for support from both your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in the Materials department are fantastic. They are genuinely invested in your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They are empathetic towards students and engage in ongoing dialogue with us about our challenges throughout the academic year. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had embraced it earlier. Referring back to my earlier mention of taking initiatives – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role permitted me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this university experience is to utilize the assistance available to you. There’s no such thing as too much support!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently misplaced and can be mitigated through the various support resources offered by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and it has demonstrated how to find joy amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
