Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was set to commence my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not a situation my formerly timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back, I realize it has been a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what have I taken away from this year, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be among your greatest concerns. On my inaugural day moving into my dormitory, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. However, today I can proudly say I’ve made some of the finest friends here at this university and in this program. I’ve established a second family at Imperial, which all started with a bit of casual conversation with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that making an effort at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that authenticity is essential. With such a variety of individuals in the program and university, you’re sure to find those who align with you.
Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors aided me during this time, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same circumstances. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you others don’t either. So, seek assistance. This might be the most vital skill to cultivate in your initial year. Ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and sustain ongoing communication regarding our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking chances – I did take one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway regarding this facet of university life is to take full advantage of the assistance available. You can never have excessive support!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the myriad of support options offered by staff and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I’m never solitary and has shown me how to find enjoyment in my experience, despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
