Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about my future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and substantial enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening elements of beginning university, and if you are an incoming student, it might be a significant worry. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester commencing, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to step out and socialize. Now, I can confidently assert that I’ve made some of the best friends during my time at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I found that taking the plunge at the start of the year is essential. If you’re not ready or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker activities designed to help you engage with others. I also realized that being authentic is vital. With such a variety of individuals across the course and university, you’re certain to encounter like-minded peers.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the level of content difficulty. There was a significant leap from A-levels, and an even larger shift from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may feel inadequate in comparison to your peers. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is navigating the same circumstances. If you find something confusing, it’s likely that others are struggling too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my next thought. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand the challenges students encounter. They empathize and keep open lines of communication with us about our concerns. I didn’t fully exploit the pastoral support network until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to become acquainted with the staff, which is priceless. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much assistance!
In conclusion, this year has imparted to me that feelings of nervousness regarding university are frequently baseless and can be mitigated by the support accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never alone and has taught me to enjoy my experience despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
