Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what was to come. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh first-year student. Throwing myself into such a situation was certainly not something my previously timid and reserved nature was accustomed to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as an academic period filled with personal growth, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained from this year, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating aspects of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it might be one of your main concerns. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, overwhelmed by the thought of stepping out and introducing myself to others. However, as I sit here today, I can confidently assert that I have formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I have created a second family at Imperial, and all it required was initiating some small conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what was my takeaway? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you feel slightly unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events and opportunities that will facilitate interaction with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, let it be authenticity. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you will surely encounter others who resonate with who you are.
Another obstacle I needed to overcome was the demanding workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first to the second semester. Being immersed in such an environment can be a challenge for your self-esteem; you might witness others studying and feel inadequate in comparison. A few thoughts helped me navigate through those feelings, one being the reminder that everyone shares your experience. If you find something confusing, I can nearly guarantee there are others who are equally perplexed. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace during your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for support from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize the struggles that students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the supportive resources until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to forge connections with the faculty, which is an incredibly valuable opportunity. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s definitely one of the most beneficial actions you can take for your own experience! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to take full advantage of the assistance that is offered to you. You can never have an excess of support!
Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both in anticipation of and during university, are typically unfounded and can be alleviated through the various support options available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, as well as how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
