Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved self was familiar with. In retrospect, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what have I discovered, and what is my current state?
One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of starting university, and if you are an upcoming student, it might be a major apprehension. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the commencement of classes, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I can assertively state that I have formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within my course. I’ve found a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I grasped? I learned that taking initiative at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaking events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can be anything, just be yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals in the course and university, you are certain to find like-minded people.
Another obstacle was the demand of the workload and complexity of the content. There was a distinct leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies aided me through this sentiment, one of which was the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that others are equally puzzled. So, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This may well be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Request help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They are invested in your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing dialogue throughout the year concerning our concerns. I did not fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking initiatives before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it is among the best actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this facet of university is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have an excess of support!
All in all, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased with the diverse support systems offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
