Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I stand now?

A major and initially intimidating hurdle was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it could be among your primary worries. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too nervous to step out and introduce myself. However, today I can proudly say that I’ve established some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, here at this institution and within this program. I’ve found a secondary family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar situations. What did I learn from this? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advisable. If you’re feeling unprepared or uncomfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to help you interact with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse group of people in the course and university, you’re bound to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was managing the workload and the difficulty of the content. There was undoubtedly a noticeable leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can challenge your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that feeling, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is experiencing the same struggle. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you there are others who feel the same. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Obtain help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances previously – I did seize one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role permitted me to connect with the staff members, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best decisions you can make for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the support that is available to you. You can never have too much!

Ultimately, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased with the various support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and it has demonstrated how to find enjoyment amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
