Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Reflecting back, I recognize a year characterized by personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of initiating university life, and if you’re perusing this as a prospective student, it may be among your foremost worries. On the day I moved into my accommodation, a few days prior to the semester’s commencement, I spent the entirety of the day sequestered in my room, too intimidated to venture out and meet others. Yet, as I sit here today, I can assert with confidence that I have formed some of the most wonderful friendships I have ever experienced here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all it required was some casual conversation with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I realized that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events will be available to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, I learned that if there’s one thing to be, be yourself. There is a diverse range of individuals across the course and the university; you are sure to encounter others who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might witness your peers studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in navigating those feelings, one being the reminder that everyone is in a similar situation. If there’s something you don’t grasp, I can almost assure you that at least a few other students are struggling as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to master in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from fellow students and the faculty!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances initially; I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role provided me the opportunity to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to get acquainted with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this facet of university is to seize the opportunities for help that are presented to you. You can never receive too much support!

Overall, this year has imparted upon me that feelings of nervousness, both in the lead-up to and during university, are typically unwarranted and can be alleviated through the various support resources available from both faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
