Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself anxious, frightened, and unsure about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of embarking on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Entering the unfamiliar territory wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I can see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This often proves to be one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might top your list of concerns. On my initial day moving into my dormitory, a few days ahead of the start of classes, I spent the whole day cooped up in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, I can now proudly state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships at this university and in my program. I’ve found a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is essential. If you don’t feel quite ready or at ease, no need to fret! Numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events will help you bond with others. I also recognized that if you can embody one thing, let it be your true self. With such a diverse range of individuals across the program and the university, you’re bound to encounter those with similar mindsets.
Another hurdle was the volume of work and complexity of content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in certain ways, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few elements assisted me in navigating that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same boat. If something eludes your understanding, I can nearly assure you that others are in the same predicament. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for support from your peers and the faculty!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to excel and acknowledge that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year was winding down, but I wish I had made use of it earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by serving as a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to become acquainted with the staff members, which is enormously beneficial. There are abundant ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the finest things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to seize the assistance available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and throughout university, are frequently unwarranted and can be eased by the various support resources accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has made me realize that I am never alone and how to revel in my experiences alongside challenges such as exams and deadlines.
